Ingredients

2 cups flour

4 teaspoons baking powder

2 tablespoons sugar

1/2 cup shortening

1 egg, well beaten

2/3 cup milk

4 teaspoons butter or margarine

4 teaspoons sugar

sliced fresh strawberries

1 cup cream, whipped

Preparation

Mix the dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening. Combine egg and milk and add to the first mixture. Stir just until all is moistened. Turn out on lightly floured board and knead lightly for several seconds. Pat dough out to 1/2" thickness. Cut into 3" rounds with floured biscuit cutter and place on ungreased cooking sheet. Dot top of each shortcake with 1/2 teaspoon butter and 1/2 teaspoon sugar. Bake in a preheated 450 oven for 15 minutes. Split shortcakes and fill with berries. Top with more berries and whipping cream.
