Ingredients
1 1/2 cups split peas
5 cups water
2 cloves garlic, whole peeled
2 slices peeled ginger
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp tumeric
1 tsp salt
1 1/3 Tbs lemon juice
2 Tbs oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp mustard seeds, preferably black
1/2 tsp crushed dried chilis
Preparation
Place first 7 ingredients in large saucepan, bring to boil, cook uncoverd until peas are cooked and most of the water is gone, about an hour.
Add lemon juice and additional salt to taste.
Heat oil in small heavy fry pan unitl hot. Add spices. Cook briefly. Do not burn. Add to peas and serve
